I am actively seeking a ... Consultant Cardiologist (interventional cardiologist, however an ability to perform TOEs (transoesophageal echocardiograms) would be highly desirable)!!!

Our University Hospitals NHS Trust is seeking an enthusiastic cardiologist with an interest in coronary intervention.

This role will support the existing team of 5 interventional cardiologists which at present delivers an elective and urgent interventional service including 24/7 Primary PCI.

The post involves a commitment to a 1:6 interventional week day on call. In addition there would be a commitment to a 1:6 weekend interventional/general cardiology on call which would include coronary care ward rounds, cardiology ward reviews and hospital referrals.

The core job plan would consist of interventional sessions which would not be fixed but dependant on catheter laboratory availability. A business case is currently being progressed for an additional cardiac catheter laboratory, which would allow fixed sessions to be allocated. The post has no commitment to Acute General Medicine but does involve participation in a 1:9 Consultant Cardiologist of the week rota.

The post joins a dynamic team of cardiologists in delivering secondary Cardiology services for the North West regional population. There are 3 non interventional cardiologists providing pacing and specialist echocardiographic services in addition to the interventionist team. This developing department provides cardiology services to a local urban and rural population of approximately 320,000 people.

Based on both hospital sites, the cardiac department provides a comprehensive range of non-invasive and interventional cardiology, including transthoracic, transoesophageal and stress echocardiography, cardiac CT, coronary angiography, coronary angioplasty and pacing for bradycardia. There is a Cardiac Physiology department at both sites. Additionally there are specialist nurses in various fields of cardiac care: 2 ischaemic heart disease; 3 heart failure and 4 rehabilitation.

There is a CCU on each site. All invasive procedures are undertaken at the Infirmary. The Heart Centre which opened in December 2011 has a modular catheter laboratory equipped with a Philips Integris system. This 12 bedded unit provides dedicated beds for the PCI service. The unit operates in close liaison with CCU on both hospital sites and the Cardiology step-down ward. This provides a 24 hour 7 days a week primary PCI service which commenced in April 2013. The Heart Centre has recently established a "radial recovery lounge", utilising recliner chairs for the recovery of radial angiogram patients. An outreach outpatient and non-invasive service is provided at West Cumberland Hospital with consultants visiting and supplementing the presence of the long-term locum consultant.

In an average year the department expects to see in excess of 2400 new outpatients, 3850 review outpatients (working on a FuN ratio of 1:1.6), and anticipates undertaking > 650 PCI procedures and 250 pacing procedures.

There are regional links with the Freeman Hospital in Newcastle and James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough. There is an outreach cardiac surgery clinic occurring weekly at the Cumberland Infirmary from the Freeman Hospital and visiting cardiac surgeons participate in the weekly multidisciplinary cardiology/cardiothoracic surgical meeting.
